A generic MAC-PHY Interface for supporting Multi-User Dynamic OFDM implementations on Software Defined Radios

چکیده
Multi-user Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) currently is of great interest to telecommunication researchers all over the world. Independently, significant research is being done on the OFDM physical layer (PHY), as well as on resource optimization and other medium access control layer (MAC) related issues. The MAC and PHY communities, however, develop their solutions mostly in isolation. In order to harmonize the PHY and MAC developments, as well as in order to make experimenting with different PHY/MAC combinations on arbitrary software defined radio (SDR) systems possible, it is necessary to define a clear interface. This document contains a proposal for such an interface. It determines the necessary information exchange between the two layers at the transmitter and the receiver side, and provides a generic application programming interface (API) consisting of three groups of MAC-PHY interface functions: data transmission, signalling, and control.

Dynamic Cognitive Radios on the Xilinx Zynq Hybrid FPGA
Cognitive radios require an intelligent MAC layer coupled with a flexible PHY layer. Most implementations use software defined radio platforms where the MAC and PHY are both implemented in software, but this can result in long processing latency, and makes advanced baseband processing unattainable. While FPGA based SDR platforms do existed, they are difficult to use, requiring significant engin...

Timing is a key issue in many wireless, lower-layer (e.g., physical and data link layer) communication protocols. Maintaining time-critical behavior while increasing MAC protocol complexity is the challenge for many MAC implementations. To comply with stringent time constraints, current MAC implementations typically require such a tight integration to the radio driver that they become one monol...

Earlier paper have demonstrated that the achievable throughput of OFDM systems can benefit significantly from individual modulation/transmit power selection on a per sub-carrier basis according to the actual gain of individual sub-carriers (so called dynamic OFDM scheme). Usage of such approach requires, however, providing support for additional functionalities like: acquisition of the sub-carr...

This thesis details the development of an Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) reference design system based off of the IEEE 802.16-2004 OFDM PHY standard. This system consists of a separate transmitter and receiver and has been implemented in VHDL for use on the Kansas University Agile Radio (KUAR). The KUAR is an experimental software-defined radio platform that is intended for r...
